Monica Boudreau, Founder, Posh media

This article Is part of our COVID-19 & Entrepreneurship series. In this series, we interview Canadian entrepreneurs and discuss how they and their businesses are reacting to the pandemic. I would like to thank all the entrepreneurs that participated for giving their time to this segment.

In this interview, we discuss the Marketing industry and It’s reactions to COVID-19 with our guest, Monica Boudreau, an Ottawa-based marketing expert, entrepreneur, and founder of posh media.

Daniyal:

Monica, thank you for answering these questions, which are sure to bring value to many of our readers! Our first question is always about the story. Business owners tend to have an interesting background that got them initially interested in entrepreneurship, what was that journey like for you?

Monica:

As cliché as it may sound, entrepreneurship has always been a part of me. I come from a family of successful entrepreneurs – I was always encouraged to dream big and was surrounded by role models who taught me great work ethics. From a young age, I knew I wanted to run my own business that would make a difference and enrich my community, it was just a matter of figuring out what that will be.

Daniyal:

Awesome, it is incredible what supportive family structures can do for a creative mind! Can you tell us a bit about your current business, and how you established it?

Monica:

After spending the early years of my career working in events, marketing and advertising, I founded posh media in July 2019. We’re a full-service bilingual marketing firm with a team of passionate and experienced marketing professionals handpicked from across the country. I wanted to fill a void between independent freelancers and large agencies to give small business owners a more personal and customized approach. That’s why we offer two partnership options that are fully adaptable to each client’s needs and budget: à la carte or monthly retainer. My focus is on making local brands thrive in their communities.

I strongly believe in the power of collaboration and wanted to ensure it was rooted in our business model. Our team will always choose collaboration over competition, our client’s journey is not about us – it’s about them. In a world full of noise, we strive to ensure brands find their North Star.

P.S. I think it’s very important to recognize my marketing mentors – I will be forever grateful to my mentors who allowed me to learn and grow under their wings!

Daniyal:

Collaboration is one of the primary reasons entrepreneurs take their businesses to the next level, and they could be a great tool during challenging times. What kind of challenges has the marketing and media industry faced during the COVID-19 crisis? What challenges has posh media faced?

Monica:

Unfortunately, many traditional agencies had to make the difficult decision to temporarily lay off their staff and close their doors. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve also faced our fair share of challenges; however, we are very fortunate to continue business operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our business structure has always encouraged a remote and flexible work environment, which allowed for a smooth transition into our new #WFH reality. Our client’s businesses are still operating and growing, which means we need to continue supporting our thriving partnerships now more than ever.

Daniyal:

Businesses of all levels have been affected through COVID-19. What marketing techniques have you used for your clients to help them navigate through the downturn?

Monica:

We’ve had to adapt, adapt and adapt. We have certainly reallocated most of their media spends towards digital and social media advertising. Although I am a firm believer that traditional marketing still works, the reality is that our target audience is no longer passing billboards on their way to work or listening to radio while dropping off the kids at hockey practice – they’re working from home listening to Spotify, staying informed through online news channels and scrolling through the ‘gram.

Daniyal:

Since traditional marketing has slowed down, what marketing advice can you give to the small and medium sized businesses across Canada that are still struggling?

Monica:

Pivot your marketing efforts and focus on where your customers are: online! With modern technology it has never been easier to have your organization noticed. Although your physical place of business may be closed, your website and online presence continue to serve as the first impressions of your brand (make sure it’s a good one!).

Daniyal:

Agreed, online presence is truly in the spotlight during these times. What changes do you think the digital marketing industry will experience Post-Covid?

Monica:

We will certainly continue to see drastic changes in customer behavior Post-Covid. The WFH culture will rise in popularity, which ultimately means an increased amount of time spent online. Plus, we’ve seen many mom and pop shops opening their first e-commerce store! This will become a major revenue stream and will encourage small businesses to evolve and adapt their marketing approach to a new generation of buyers.

Daniyal:

WFH has certainly become a trending topic and reality for so many, it will be interesting to see where it leads! For our final question, do you have anything going on right now that you would like to share with our readers?

Monica:

Enough about us. I want to take the opportunity to thank our front-line and healthcare workers for keeping us all safe. Let’s continue to be kind to one another. We will get through this, together!

Also, we have a bigger and better company website dropping soon, so keep your eyes peeled for the big reveal! Every so often, we all need a makeover.

Daniyal:

Thank you for your time in answering these questions, they help bring value to entrepreneurs that are searching for options in these trying times.
